This marvellous fruit has fibre and carbohydrates in the right mix, and provides children with fuel and stamina&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-rV3NWCb7Yj\" class=\"wp-block-nectar-blocks-text nectar-blocks-text\">Eating orange halves at half time will also help keep your child hydrated, as oranges have high water content &#8211; unlike lollies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-7RfdjFGNGe\" class=\"wp-block-nectar-blocks-text nectar-blocks-text\">Sadly we now see coaches of junior sports teams handing out sweets and candy bars like confetti.\u00a0 Concentrated sugar in the body, such as in sweets, always come with adverse biological reactions in a child&#8217;s body, whether it is obvious or not.\u00a0 Visible reactions can go from a hyper-active sugar \u201chigh\u201d &#8211; through to irrational and violent behaviour, often ending in extreme lethargy and fatigue.\u00a0 Not what a coach wants to see in his or her team!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-nectar-blocks-image nectar-blocks-image\" id=\"block-qQG7aD3Wf4\"><div class=\"nectar-blocks-image__inner\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1280\" class=\"wp-image-606\" src=\"https:\/\/skymediatest.co.nz\/performancehealth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/bj-pearce-Ag36XuTuARM-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"bj-pearce-Ag36XuTuARM-unsplash\" srcset=\"https:\/\/skymediatest.co.nz\/performancehealth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/bj-pearce-Ag36XuTuARM-unsplash.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/skymediatest.co.nz\/performancehealth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/bj-pearce-Ag36XuTuARM-unsplash-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/skymediatest.co.nz\/performancehealth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/bj-pearce-Ag36XuTuARM-unsplash-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/skymediatest.co.nz\/performancehealth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/bj-pearce-Ag36XuTuARM-unsplash-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/skymediatest.co.nz\/performancehealth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/bj-pearce-Ag36XuTuARM-unsplash-1536x1024.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-MVv6NxyRmy\" class=\"wp-block-nectar-blocks-text nectar-blocks-text\">Chemical ingredients in sweets and sweet drinks (as many so-called \u2018sports\u2019 drinks are) will also cause certain children to have adverse and uncharacteristic reactions to the preservatives, colourings, flavourings and stabilisers they are laced with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-l09Brw8vy6\" class=\"wp-block-nectar-blocks-text nectar-blocks-text\">If a child&#8217;s overall diet is well balanced, there should be no adverse dental issues with eating oranges at half time &#8211; which seems to be the main argument for this shameful change.\u00a0 This is one area where dentists seem united, indicating that children are far better off eating oranges or other healthy snacks rather than sweets, soft drinks, sports drinks, etc, during and after the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-GdsGXBViOO\" class=\"wp-block-nectar-blocks-text nectar-blocks-text\">Prof. Grant Schofield explains, &#8220;I\u2019d say most professional sports teams are now at least [consuming] low sugar or low carb. That\u2019s not always high fat, but it\u2019s healthy fats.
